Description

The Imperial Brewing Company was the brainchild of St. Louis investors who saw wonderful opportunities in the growing Kansas City market. Contracts to build the Imperial Brewery were issued early in the summer of 1901, with its formal opening in the spring of 1902. As the operation’s construction costs tripled, the complex quickly added a two-story office building, two-story bottling works, 250-ton ice making plant and draft horse stables for delivery wagons. The burgeoning operation churned 50,000 barrels of beer per year under two lager-style , mainstay brands, Mayflower and Imperial Seal. The Imperial Brewery fell to financial stress in 1905, and was sold to a conglomerate known as the Kansas City Breweries Company. The new owners invested in improvements that increased production to over 338,000 barrels per year.

As most brewery operations during the national Prohibition of 1919, the Imperial Brewing Company operation failed and was sold to Seaboard Milling Company. The successful flour mill remained operational through the mid-1980s. In 2002, Dean Realty Co. entered into a contract to acquire the Imperial Brewery property, together with adjoining real estate, from the Kansas City Terminal Railway Corporation.

The Imperial Brewery site and stable buildings were registered on the National Historic Register in 2011. The barn is cited as one of the last remaining in the country.

While once fallen to taggers and vandals, both buildings represent eras significant to the history of Kansas City, and it is Dean Realty Co.’s mission to ensure that both are preserved for prudent and worthy redevelopment projects.
