Dean Realty Co. was founded in 1958 by Lester M. Dean, Sr., then president of Dean Machinery Co. With heavy equipment available to move the earth and build infrastructure, the commercial real estate entrepreneur broke ground in the late 1950s and early 1960s with two large-scale projects. Dean’s Downtown Business Park, comprised of 16 buildings, offers 456,000 square feet of office and industrial space just south of Kansas City’s Downtown loop at 31st and Mercier/Terrace Streets. Also off 31st Street, Dean’s Downtown Underground, a converted 1.2 million square foot mine, offers office, warehouse and storage space. Dean’s Downtown Underground is the first subterranean development of its kind in America.
From the late 1970s through 2008, Cambridge Business Park evolved into seven business centers, two office buildings and a high-tech industrial center serving metro businesses with over 416,000 square feet of space. Spanning both the Missouri and Kansas sides of the Kansas City metro at I-35 & Cambridge Circle Drive, the Park features additional building sites with spectacular panoramic views.
Dean’s family-owned portfolio grew to 2.1 million square feet. In 2019, the company entered into a joint venture with Copaken Brooks, who took over management of most of the portfolio properties. Several acreage tracts with unique development opportunities remain for sale with Dean Realty Co. The company is presently led by Walt Clements, President and CEO.
